Audi just unveiled the second generation of the A5 Sportback, a direct competitor to the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. Unfortunately, it arrived without the hardcore RS5 version, but we can easily fix that with a rendering.
The most recently unveiled RS models were small ones, the TT RS and RS3 sedan (sort of). So we can't say for sure if the rendering is accurate. Audi's head of design, Marc Lichte, might have an entirely different vision for the mighty performance vehicles that will take on the C63 and M3/M4.
However, we're bound to get good-looking machines. This rendering by X-Tomi Design features the trademark enlarged air intakes of an RS model added on top of the S5 Sportback body. A whole bunch of black honeycomb grilles are set deep within silver frames, creating a high-tech look.
Other than that, you guys know what to expect from the RS5 Sportback regarding exterior design: big wheels, big fenders, big exhaust and some really expensive options.
For the first time in Audi history, the RS model will have a smaller displacement engine than the S5. While the S5 Sportback has already been revealed to have the same 3.0 TFSI turbo as the S4, we'll have to wait until 2017 or even 2018 for the RS5 Sportback to show its 2.9-liter twin-turbo.
That's right, we're talking about the same engine used by the all-new Porsche Panamera 4S. Although rumors suggested it could have as much as 500 PS, we now think 420 to 450 PS is a much more reasonable expectation.
Why are we so sure there's going to be a 4-door RS5 when the wasn't one before? Well, it has been indirectly confirmed by Audi USA bosses, who said they will sell "something else" in place of the RS4 sedan the fans keep asking for. And that something else just happens to be a cross between a sedan and a coupe that's powered by an engine from Porsche.
