In 2011, Volkswagen had replaced the Fox with the up!, a small car that’s worthy of the exclamation mark at the end of its name. Two years later, Volkswagen pushed the envelope even further with the introduction of the e-Up!, the smallest EV ever made by VW.
Now the time has come for the German manufacturer to freshen up the e-Up!. Cue the model year 2017 facelift, which is now available for order in the United Kingdom. Price? £20,780, including the government grant of £4,500. If you were wondering, the eco-friendly e-up! costs €26,900 in Germany.

Deliveries for the right-hand drive, UK-spec model are expected to begin next month. The four-seater city car boasts an electric motor where in a regular Up! you’d find a three-cylinder engine revving its heart out. The pure electric model prides itself on 82 PS (81 bhp) and peak torque of 210 Nm (155 lb-ft). So to speak, exactly the same output figures as the old Volkswagen e-Up!.

Even acceleration and top speed mirror that of the pre-facelifted model: 12.4 seconds to 100 km/h (62 mph), and on to a maximum velocity of 130 km/h (80 mph). The electric zap derives from a lithium-ion battery that can be found within the e-Up!’s floor, rated at 18.7 kWh.

93 miles (150 kilometers) is as much as the e-Up! can travel between charges. If the owner can find a fast charge station, the battery can be filled up to 80 percent capacity in something like 30 minutes. From a standard British household plug, a full charge takes nine hours.

As an electric vehicle, the 2017 Volkswagen e-Up! is not what your father might call the bee’s knees. But it’s a start for a brand that, after the Dieselgate fiasco, is planning on bringing more capable EVs to market. For what it’s worth, the e-Up! also happens to be very well equipped from the get-go, with plenty of standard equipment for this vehicle segment.

Highlights included air conditioning, cruise control, auto windshield wipers and headlights, as well as an array of parking sensors. Not that you’d need parking sensors in a car this small. Last, but not least, the UK-spec e-Up! is accompanied by a three-year warranty, plus an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty on the battery pack.
