You might be tempted to think an electric version of an existing petrol-powered city car is an afterthought, but we have no doubt Volkswagen made a winner here.
The e-Up! which they brought to this year's Frankfurt Motor Show 2013 is not as impressive to look at as a Tesla Model S, but Vdub say it's the most frugal EV in the world, and at €27,000 it's not exactly going to brake the bank either.
Powered by a 60 kW (82 PS) electric motor, the e-Up! also provides the driver with 210 Nm instantaneous torque. Basically, this makes it more powerful than any normal version of the Up! you can buy right now. 0 to 100 km/h takes 12.4 seconds and top speed is 130 km/h (81 mph).
The 18.7 kWh lithium-ion batter has been integrated under the passenger compartment floor and gives this little car a range of between 120 Km (74 miles) and 160 km (99 miles).
The Germans claim electric consumption of 11.7 kW per 100 kilometers and say it would cost you only €3 to charge it up for that distance. From a regular wall plug, it takes 9h to fully charge the e-Up!. You can also do it in 6 hours using a special wall box or bring it to 80% charge in just 30 minutes using their Combined Charging System.
Right after Frankfurt, you'll be able to buy your own e-Up! in Germany from €26,900.
