This year's edition of the New York Auto Show promises to be the best one ever for the fans of the AMG performance brand. We are going to see the CLA 45 facelift, E43 4Matic, GLC 43 and this, the C63 Convertible or Cabriolet.
There are two main reasons why you should get super-excited. First, it's the initial model of its kind, since the W204 family didn't include a convertible body. Second, it's packing the big boy engine, unlike the E-Class and GLC-Class that have a V6.
That means we can expect the 4.0-liter twin-turbo under the hood to deliver up to 510 PS or 503 bhp. Given a few years, we may even get more. However, there is no reason to complain, considering the turbochargers give you 25 more hp and 100 Nm (72 lb-ft) over the 6.3-liter V8 of the previous version in its peak form. It is also likely to come with the same seven-speed Speedshift MCT.
These latest spy photos show the C63 (probably the S model) Cabriolet testing at the Nurburgring. Even though it will debut during this week's New York Auto Show, the performance convertible still isn't ready for mass production. That's why engineers are still doing track testing to find out if there are any components that can't stand up to the test. Or maybe the seatbelts aren't red enough, right?
The images show the same front bumper and wide wheel arches as the C63 Coupe. We also see the same folding cloth roof as regular C-Cabrio models and a quad exhaust system. With a 0 to 100 km/h time or around 4 seconds and the open-air sensations that an AMG GT can't deliver, we can see it being quite successful.
The C63 Cabriolet already has a worthy adversary in the BMW M4. Unfortunately, Audi will be missing from this part of the market until at least 2018. Their fastest and most powerful convertible will be the S5 coming out later this year with only about 350 horsepower.
