For the 2018 model year, the golden bowtie confirmed that the Cruze Hatchback and all-new Equinox would be available with a 1.6-liter turbo diesel closely related to the one the Europeans have in the Opel Astra. Now, though, a new report suggests that the said oil-chugging mill will also be available in the 2017 Cruze Sedan.
Sometime later in the 2017 model year, Roadshow reports that the Cruze Sedan will go on sale with a turbo diesel engine under the hood. Expected to hold a suggested retail price of “$24,670 without any options,” the diesel-powered Cruze sedan will be coming as standard with a 6-speed manual.
For those who can’t do without a slushbox, Chevrolet has got you covered with the GM Hydra-Matic 9T50. The 9-speeder made its debut in the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu Premier 2.0 Turbo and, in the Cruze Sedan Diesel’s case, it’s priced at $1,600. Hence, the auto model will set buyers back $26,720.
Roadshow also discloses that the Cruze Diesel comes in only one flavor. Inspired by the Cruze LT grade of the gas-powered sedan, the standard features list includes a 7-inch infotainment system with satellite radio, six speakers, LED daytime running lights, and the Convenience Package (which adds power driver’s seat, heated front seats, and keyless entry and start).
The optional Leather Package, meanwhile, is priced at $1,125, bringing the price up to $25,795 and $27,395, respectively. Those who spec their Cruze Diesel sedans with the 9T50 automatic transmission can add a further package, which includes Bose audio, 8-inch infotainment, TFT screen in the instrument cluster, ambient lighting, power sunroof, and a handful of safety features. The total for the most lavish 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel? $29,950.
It’s a lot of money for a Cruze, damn straight, but bear in mind this is a fully-loaded example with hopes to achieve an EPA-rated 50 miles per gallon highway. By comparison, the Toyota Prius Eco is capable of 53 miles per gallon on the highway, while the gas-powered Cruze is good for 40 mpg.
