Here’s a listing you don’t come by every day: a fifth-generation Camaro Z/28 with less than 400 miles on the odometer. But more impressively, the asking price for this car is just $49,995.
When it went on sale in 2013 for the 2014 model year, the Camaro Z/28 was going for $75,000 including the destination and handling fee, plus the gas-guzzler tax. Offered for sale by Naples Auto Collection, the ad mentions that “General Motors used it as a display vehicle.” In other words, the Red Hot over Black Camaro Z/28 here was never shipped to a dealership.
On the other hand, there’s nothing baffling about the 427 cu.in. V8 hiding under the hood. Churning out 505 horsepower at 6,100 rpm and 481 pound-feet of torque at 4,800 rpm from 7.0 liters, the Gen IV-based LS7 engine proves that there’s no replacement for displacement. Built by hand in Wixom, Michigan, the LS7 blunderbuss is enhanced by forged steel bearing caps and forged titanium connecting rods, among other go-faster bits and bobs.
Designed to produce a lot of downforce at high speed, the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 also happens to be quite quick off the line. Capable of hitting 60 mph in just 4.0 seconds, the LS7 and Tremec TR6060 6-speed manual can motivate the Camaro Z/28 up to 172 miles per hour (277 km/h). Thank the Lord for six-piston monobloc calipers at the front axle, complete with 15.5-inch carbon-ceramic brake rotors for tremendous stopping prowess.
On the handling front, the 305/30ZR 19-inch Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R super-sticky rubber and Multimatic-developed DSSV dampers are the highlights. However, bear in mind that the Z/28 isn’t the most comfortable car to drive on public roads. Outside visibility and the spartan cabin are other downsides to the most track-focused Camaro from the pony car’s fifth generation.
On that note, there’s an all-new Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 planned to make its market launch in North America for the 2018 model year. And from the looks of recently spied prototypes, the Gen 6-based new kid on the block will be even better at carving corners than its venerable predecessor.
