Nowadays, you can buy a family SUV for £100,000. So a £129,900 convertible supercar could be the bargain of the century. But hold on to your hats, because we need to examine what makes the 2017 Audi R8 Spyder special.
It's just like the coupe in terms of hardware, but there are a few things you need to know about it. Unlike the Ferrari California T, the R8 Spyder has a folding fabric roof, not a metal one. It also differs from its Lamborghini Huracan sister car in that it doesn't have any humps at the back, improving visibility a lot.
The top goes up and down in 20 seconds at speeds of up to 50 km/h or 31 mph. You can have it in black, brown and red. Audi also says that it's quieter and less turbulent than the old R8.
Sitting inside the R8 Spyder feels like a much more technologically advanced placed to be than the Mercedes-AMG SL63, which could be considered a rival too. Honestly, having a map in front of you is cool, but not as useful as you might think.
Fortunately, you can option all the carbon fiber trim you want so you won't feel like you've bought the cheaper relative of the Huracan. The steering wheel has lots of cool buttons, including a big red one that starts the engine and one that activates the exhaust's Loonie Tunes mode.
The engine doesn't have that cool glass cover you get with the coupe. For £129,900, Audi UK will only give you a 540 horsepower version of the 5.2-liter V10. It should be more than enough, as the car will go from 0 to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 197 mph.
Unfortunately, the performance model with 610 PS isn't available at this moment so the Jaguar F-Type SVR might win a drag race against you. Bummer.
Options? Lots, and very expensive too. Audi will offer the Sport Plus Pack to those wishing for more dynamism. It includes variable-ratio dynamic steering, magnetic ride adaptive damping and an even louder sport exhaust with black exhaust tailpipes.
