A few days are left until Nissan USA will finally unveil their all-new full-size pickup truck. Filling the shoes of the Titan won’t be easy at all, but the 2016 Nissan Titan shapes up to be better than its predecessor, at least that’s what the second chapter of the so-called Truckumentary is hinting.
autoevolution will report live from the Detroit Auto Show, but ’til the doors of the venue open on January 12th, we are only left with a few details gathered from the teaser video attached below. But before we go through them all, Nissan USA director of product planning and Titan chief product specialist Rich Miller shares an interesting detail.
Rich hints at a considerable improvement in terms of fuel economy, as well as the engineers’ focus on making the 2016 Nissan Titan more economical than ever. If we are not reading too much into these words, then we suspect that the 2015 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel was used as a benchmark for the new Titan.
Designed in California, engineered in Michigan, tested in Arizona, powered by gasoline and diesel motors made in Indiana and Tennessee and slated to be assembled at a state-of-the-art facility in Mississippi
The 2016 Nissan Titan is what one might call a true American workhorse. Even the styling is more Americana than what the Japanese badge up front would led you to believe, which is rather nice.
With the mesh of the radiator grille looking similar to a number of current Land Rover products, projector beam headlights and cool-looking blinkers integrated in the big side mirrors, the all-new Titan differentiates itself greatly from the outgoing model. In the screenshot gallery below, there’s also a pretty revealing pic of the truck’s interior.
Keep in mind this is a pre-production test mule, but still, there’s no shifter centrally mounted on the transmission tunnel, which leads us to believe that the chunky stalk on the right of the steering column acts as the gear shifter. In addition to this, the infotainment system is very similar to the current 5-inch Nissan Connect with Mobile Apps unit.
Lastly, the 5.0-liter V8 ISV Cummins turbo diesel engine. There’s no new info on the oil burner, but do expect over 300 horsepower and 550 lb-ft (745 Nm) of torque. If you take into account that the 3-liter V6 motor of the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel churns out 240 hp and 420 lb-ft (569 Nm) of torque, then imagine what 5 liters, 8 cylinders and a Holset M2 Two-Stage sequential twin-turbo setup is capable of.
