General Motors and especially Ford upped the pickup truck game in the last 12 month by a huge margin. To put things into perspective, the arrival of the all-new 2015 Ford F-150 with its aluminum body, as well as the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado mid-size workhorse are only the beginning of how this segment will evolve.
We’re extremely curious if the upcoming 2016 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor will be propelled by a turbocharged motor that’s known as the EcoBeast, if the 2016 Nissan Titan will beat the 2015 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel and if the 2016 Toyota Tacoma will be as good as the video and photo teasers announce it is.
As you might’ve guessed by now, the Ram Trucks brand isn’t boasting with too many new stuff as of late, but we are in for a surprise on January 12th, at the 2015 NAIAS. According to a teaser video published by the marque on its Twitter account, we’re told that “Life’s more fun off the beaten path. An exciting new way to get there is coming soon! #RamRules.”
The former generation Ram Trucks family (DR/DH/D1/DC/DM) was produced from 2001 to 2009 (both the light and heavy-duty), while the current-gen (DS/DJ) has started assembly in the fall of 2008. This being 2015, the Ram truck is roughly 7 years old this year, which begs the question if an all-new generation is nearing its debut. We don’t mean to get any hopes up and we don’t recommend to believe in speculations, but expect a fairly mild update for the 1500 and the heavy-duty family to arrive soon.
Last but not least, Ram Trucks CEO Bob Hegbloom told at a press conference late last year that a “refreshed 2016 Ram pickup truck” will debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January, with the major model update slated for the 2017 model year. With the 707 horsepower Hellcat around and a history of equipping trucks with the Viper’s V10 engine, Hegbloom also suggested that the Ram Hellcat is a rather enticing addition, but it won’t happen in the near future. Still, a 707 hp light-duty pickup? Hell yes!

Okay, so what’s that all about?
Well, “off the beaten path” is a sure shot reference to off-road capability, while the hikers and “CAUTION - Unpaved Trail Ahead!” sign featured in the clip are tell-tale signs of only one thing - an updated Ram 2500 Power Wagon, if our intuition is correct, to be sold as a 2016 model year. But there’s another curiosity that needs to be pointed out.The former generation Ram Trucks family (DR/DH/D1/DC/DM) was produced from 2001 to 2009 (both the light and heavy-duty), while the current-gen (DS/DJ) has started assembly in the fall of 2008.
