Audi just announced the price tags for its 2016 model year A6 and A7 sedans in the US. The cheapest A6 will set you back at least $46,200 while the A7 starts at $68,300.
Don’t expect a lot of bang for the buck for these price tags though. The $46k A6 is the entry-level model fitted with a 2-liter 4-cylinder TFSI engine and front-wheel drive. That’s a recipe for disaster, especially in this segment where its main rivals like the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class are rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
The engine makes 252 HP and 370 Nm (273 lb-ft) of torque which is more than decent even for a car the size of the A6. Compared to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, for example, it’s an incredibly better deal.
The entry-level Merc is $52,650 and has a 2.1-liter 4-cylinder diesel turbocharged engine under the bonnet, making just 195 HP. BMW has a slightly better offer in the shape of the $49,950 528i Sedan that has a 245 HP 2-liter 4-cylinder petrol engine.
Of course, those are just starting price. Optioning out your preferred car will set you back some more. For example, just adding quattro all-wheel drive on the A6 costs $2,200, regardless of the drivetrain.
The A7, on the other hand, can’t come with an engine any smaller than a 3-liter V6. The starting price of $68,300 MSRP is for the Premium Plus model that has 333 HP and 325 lb-ft (440 Nm) of torque to rely on with the TFSI 3-liter turbocharged plant under the bonnet. The only other choice available in the US is the 3-liter TDI V6 that makes 240 HP and 428 lb-ft (580 Nm) of torque. However, the starting price for the more frugal choice is $70,400. Adding the Prestige package to the mix will set you back another $2,650 which is not bad at all.
By comparison, the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe starts at $78,800 MSRP while the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class is $65,990 MSRP. The advantage goes to the Merc here, no doubt about it. Of course, you’ll have to add $925 on each price tag in handling and destination charges.
