The second generation of the Porsche Cayenne is currently in its last model year, with the mid-cycle facelift having entered its final testing phase. We’ve recently come across two Cayenne test vehicles, which showed as much conservatism as possible - one was dressed in Silver and the other one in Grey.
The looks

As you may have noticed with models such as the Cayman / Boxster GTS, as well as in recent 911 facelift spyshots, Porsche is discreetly introducing more angular elements into its design language. For the revamped Cayenne, this means the car will have a sleeker appearance, something to make it look a bit more compact, especially when it comes to the car’s face.

Interestingly enough, the process brings the Cayenne closer to the Macan. For instance, the rounded elements in the headlights now make room for edgier ones, just like on the Macan. Moreover, the front grille sees its center section increase in height, while the side areas feature the Macan’s plastic add-on elements.

As far as the sides of the Porsche Cayenne are concerned, things remain unchanged. Expect new wheel designs though.

The Cayenne’s taillights were never a strong visual point of the car. Porsche knows this and is keeping the revised units under heavy camo, so we still can’t tell anything else besides the fact that they appear to have seriously restyled the taillights.

Just below, we find an updated rear apron, but if you’d put this next to the current one, you could tell it’s difference, albeit having a difficult time spotting the newer one. Alas, the revamped styling makes the rear bumper look more generic, with the most important change being an increase in size for the exhaust tips. Aiming to look cool.

Hop aboard

The 2015 Porsche Cayenne facelift’s cabin will be the least updated area of the car. Despite this, we should see a new multifunction steering wheel - let’s hope the Cayenne follows the Macan’s lead, offering a steering wheel that comes with both paddles and buttons, as well as a heating option - at the moment, the Cayenne makes you choose between a multifunction steering wheel and a paddle-gifted one.

The tech stuff

With Porsche being Porsche, the most important changes for this revamp will be technical. Following the footsteps of the Porsche Panamera refresh, the 2015 Cayenne S should loose its 4.8-liter naturally-aspirated V8 in favor of a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 delivering 420 horses. Europeans will be thrilled thanks to tax-related issues.

The eco transformation is taken even further by the upcoming Cayenne S E-Hybrid. Borrowing the petrol (supercharged V6)-electric powertrain of the 2014 Panamera S E-Hybrid, this will mix an overal output of 416 hp with a fuel efficiencyt of up to 75 mpg (3 l/100 km).

On the diesel side of the range, the entry-level 240 hp could be replaced with a 300 hp version, following the Panamera Diesel’s scheme. At the other end of the line-up, the Cayenne Turbo and Cayenne Turbo S should also receive a bit of attention, with the latter expected to match the revamped Panamera Turbo S’ 570 hp output.

Further down the power line, we’ll find PDK transmissions in all models but the S E-Hybrid and Diesel, which work with the eight-speed automatic.

Should I ask my dealer about it?

Porsche is expected to show the new face of the Cayenne by the end of the current year, possibly at the Paris Motor Show this fall. Just when the weather starts to ask for an SUV.
