Round about the end of 2013, rumors started circulating that Stuttgart was working on a 911 Safari concept which would bow at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show. That time has come and gone, but the idea of a jacked up sportscar with protective body cladding has stuck and isn't going away any time soon.
This next rendering created by X-Tomi Design shows is a really novel idea: the Cayman Safari. Not only is the baby coupe from Porsche not equipped with all wheel drive, but it also lacks the desert racing heritage of the 9 und 11.
Porsche's one and only mid-engined coupe owes its name to a small "alligatorid crocodylian" which inhabit Central and South America. Now, they might not have anything to do with the Africa, but neither does the Dakar rally nowadays, so putting the two named together is perfectly fine.
Is it just us or does this raised Cayman look just like a crocodile standing up on its legs. It's an unnatural look, but one that some customers might find interesting. With low ground clearance, there aren't a lot of places that welcome true sportscars like this one, but the Safari could potentially be the perfect partner for a skiing adventure. So what next, a top box and ski rack?
In December 2013, German publication Motor Revue stated the 911 Safari concept is being prepared for a 2014 debut. This would pay tribute to the 953 series of offroad race cars designed to take on the grueling Paris to Dakar rally. They came out in 1978 and were equipped with long-travel suspension, a locking rear diff and an air-cooled 3-liter boxer with 250 horsepower.
