Ford just took the wraps off its 2015 Focus ST a slightly updated version of the GTI-rivaling hot hatch that also packs a big surprise under the bonnet. However, there are no photos for the new ST Wagon, which Ford talked about but never detailed.
To date, Ford has sold over 140,000 Focus ST models since 2002, a huge number considering overpowered hatchbacks are not enjoyed by everyday drivers. Give the high demand, finding diversity was crucial for the Blue Oval brand. A diesel version is thus now available, packing a 2-liter TDCi with 185 PS and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque.
Predictably, it's not as fast as the petrol powered ST, since it is 65 PS down, but 0 to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds and a maximum speed of 217 km/h (135 mph) are still respectable numbers. We're willing to bet a lot of people will want to make this compromise, since average fuel consumption is only 4.4 l/100 km (64.2 mpg).
And something tells us those people also want a wagon body, with more cargo room in the back for extreme family hauling. How do we know? Because Skoda's Octavia vRS Combi stands in the middle of the market, like a giant blob of reasonableness. It also has a big boot and crucially motivates itself to the rattly sound of diesel. Its 184 hp PS output, matched to 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque, is also available from Volkswagen's dedicated diesel street racer, the Golf GTD.
