There’s more than one new M engine that’s going to come out this year. Apart from the new S55 unit used on the 2015 BMW M3 and M4 models, the Germans could also introduce an updated version of the S63 unit that’s powering a lot of their M cars at the moment.
The 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine is currently found on the M5, M6 Coupe, Convertible and Gran Coupe as well as the E71 X6 M and retired E70 X5 M. However, the last two models are using an older version that makes 555 HP and 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) of torque.

On the new F85 X5 M, we’re expecting BMW to introduce either the S63B44T0 version of that engine (the one making 560 HP) or an even better unit, making more power and more torque.

While the latter option might still be a dream at the moment, the F85 X5 M was just spotted on the Ring a couple of days back, testing what definitely sounds like a V8.

The car was not only tested on the Green Hell but it looked as if it was taken to the limit on more than one occasion. The sound the SAV makes is absolutely sublime and we can’t wait to get our greedy little hands on it.

Unfortunately, BMW didn’t release any statement regarding the launch of the new M car just yet but our insider info points to a Paris launch, later this year. Hopefully we’re right!
