It seems like the guys from BMW’s M division just don’t know what to do anymore to make sure they create the ultimate cars. Lately, they apparently started to work more on the SUV side of things, now that the M3 and M4 models are officially out.
The new F15 X5 has been receiving mostly positive reviews, mainly because of its new chassis and lighter construction, paired with a lot of new technology onboard due to the new iDrive system. We’re hoping the M version will undergo the same treatment when it’s going to be revealed.
From the looks of it, the brakes will be prepared to take on the challenge (look at those huge drilled rotors) as well as the wheels and the exhaust (4 pipes for the win!). Talking about the wheels, an odd detail caught our eye when looking at the black prototype.
It seems like it’s using two different sets of wheels. The rear wheels look a lot like they come from BBS instead of BMW’s own manufacturing lines. Why you ask? Who knows? Maybe they wanted to be able to change the tires quickly and ran out of rims (yeah, I know, it sounds ridiculous) or maybe they wanted to use different sized wheels, who knows...
Another thing we don’t know is the engine that will be used. However, looking over recent developments, we think it’s going to be the S63Tu unit, replacing the S63 unit, with 560 HP and 680 Nm (502 lb-ft) of torque. I know, only 5 extra HP seems like nothing but the overall car should also be lighter and more precise, therefore making such numbers matter less.
The X5 M should show up somewhere next year, hopefully at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
