Ford has announced the introduction of its rear inflatable safety belt on the 2014 Fusion, which thus becomes the first mid-size sedan to offer such a feature.
Already available in the Explored, Flex, Taurus, Lincoln MKT and Lincoln MKZ models, the rear inflatable seat belt helps reduce head, neck and chest injuries for rear-seat passengers. While it performs just like a conventional seat belt in every day use, the rear inflatable seat belt will instantly inflate with compressed gas, thanks to its sensors, in the event of a crash.
“The inflatable belt is designed to help reduce head, neck and chest injuries for rear-seat passengers, often children and older passengers who can be more vulnerable to such injuries,” said Srinivasan Sundararajan, safety technical leader at Ford’s research and advanced engineering group. “This is another unique family technology that builds on our safety leadership.”
The rear inflatable seat belt option can also be requested on the Hybrid and Energy versions of the 2014 Fusion.
