Mercedes-Benz GLA Official Photos and Specifications

It turns out that almost each time a car manufacturer has tried to prolong the wait for a new model by starting a teasing campaign in recent years, there was always some dude (or dudette) that somehow got ahold of the official information for the car and decided to spill the beans early.

This is exactly what happened to Mercedes Benz last night, when someone decided that the teasing campaign for the new GLA (X156) should be ended abruptly by releasing official photos early.

The three-pointed star marketing machine had a very reasonable response time to the whole shenanigans and released the entire official information and a ton of pictures about seven hours later.

The New Mercedes-Benz GLA is here to bite into the rather recently created compact executive crossover pie, that until now only fed the BMW X1 and the Audi Q3.

At launch, there will be four different engines, two diesel and two petrol, each of them fitted with a turbocharger and direct injection.

The base gasoline engine will be represented by the GLA 200 moniker, with a 1.6-liter four banger that develops 156 hp and 250 Nm (184.4 lb ft) of torque available from as low as 1250 rpm to 4000 rpm.

The smallest diesel (by power figures) in the lineup will be the GLA 200 CDI, also available with 4Matic. With a 2.1-liter displacement, 136 hp and 300 Nm (221.3 lb ft), available from an almost idle 1200 rpm to 4000 rpm, this will probably be the best sold model in Europe, especially because of it 4.3 liters per 100 km (54.7 mpg) fuel consumption. Don't go by these official figures yet, though, since this is probably the first diesel engine we ever heard of that has its maximum torque and maximum horsepower power figure at the same rpm.

The more powerful version of the 2.1-liter diesel will be represented by the GLA 220 CDI (available with either front-wheel drive or 4Matic), with 170 hp and 350 Nm (258.1 lb ft) from 1600 rpm to 3200 rpm.

Until the GLA 45 AMG arrives, the GLA 250 (with or without 4Matic) is the flagship engine for the car. It's a 2-liter four-pot mill with 211 hp and 350 Nm (258.1 lb ft) available from 1200 to 4000 rpm. Equipped with 4Matic all-wheel drive, this version can accelerate from naught to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds.

Apart from all the technology goodies we saw on the A-Class and the CLA so far, the GLA compact crossover will also feature DSR (Downhill Speed Regulation) and an off-road transmission mode as standard for the all-wheel drive 4Matic versions, for those rare times when its owners will ever need it while off-roading.

The Cd figure of 0.29 promises to be a segment leader, bringing a lower fuel consumption and wind sound level at high speeds. With a length of 4417 mm (173.9 inches), a width of 1804 mm (71 inches) and a height of 1494 mm (58.8 inches), the Mercedes-Benz GLA promises to be a perfect fit for around town, without compromising its interior space and luggage compartment, which sits at between 421 and 836 liters (14.9 to 29.5 cubic feet), depending on the positioning of the rear seat.
