Marc Coma clawed another win for KTM in Stage 9, followed by Yamaha's Cyril Despres, 5m45s behind, seemingly having found a better rhythm in the last stages and starting to close the gap to the top 5 positions.
A 5-times Dakar winner, Despres has only theoretical chances to make up for his delay and make it to the podium. He now climber back to the 8th position in the general standings, and is 15 minutes adrift from team mate Olivier Pain, in 5th. However, he still is 36 minutes down from Jordi Viladoms who is in the provisional 3rd position.
Stage 9 saw Pedrero Garcia (Sherco) thirs, with Stefan Svitko (KTM) and Helder Rodrigues for top 5. Joan Barreda fell back to 9th best in Stage 9, followed closely by Pain.
Overall, Coma has a comfortable 55-minute lead over Barreda, and Viladoms is 1h54m adrift, in the third position. Israel Esquerre (Speedbrain) is 4th and the top 5 is complete with Yamaha's Pain.
Stage 10 links Iquique and Antofagasta, with 58 km (36 miles) of liaison and a whopping timed section of 631 km (392 miles).
