After a heart-attack finish in the first race of the Portuguese leg of the 2013 World Superbike series at Portimao, with Melandri and Guintoli in a rare photo finish battle, it was time for Irishman Eugene Laverty to claim his forst step of the podium.
With an almost impeccable riding, Laverty's win was as swift as it could ever be, bringing valuable points for the Aprilia factory team, who seem to have a great year. The only rider who was able to keep up with Laverty was Jonathan Rear riding Honda machinery.

Despiute Rea's good race, Frenchman Sylvain Guintoli managed to squeeze through and got the better of the Brit, completing yet another 1-2 for Aprilia and extending his lead in the overall standings, with this second position 2 for the weekend.

The top five was whole with Kawasaki's Loris Baz and BMW rider Chaz Davies. Marco Melandri suffered from excessive tire usage and was forced to ride at a slow, careful pace, finishing the race in the 12th position. Pirelli is investigating the problem.

Sykes had a crash in the sighting lap and his bike kept on running into trouble, as he went to the pits twice and missing the checkered flag. However, Sykes was able to set a new lap record of 1m42s475.

The next 2013 WSBK round is in Imola, Italy, at the historic Enzo & Dino Ferrari circuit, on Sunday, June 30th.
