We know that there’s nothing that special about the body of he TDI version of the Beetle, but it’s still a magical little car, since it’s going to be a lot more fun to drive that the old 1.9-liter TDI was. The bad news is that VW in their infinite wisdom never offered the more powerful version of the 2.0-liter turbo diesel. Oh well, economy is the main focus here, we get that!
At the Chicago Motor Show, the Beetle TDI was shown for the first time to US consumers, before it goes on sale in the late part of the year. The 2.0-liter TDI engine puts out 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque, but it’s party trick is that it can do 39 mpg highway and 29 mpg city. Or at least that’s what VW says.
