ABT Announces 2012 Beetle Customization Project

Last month, we brought you the first tuning project for the 2012 VW Beetle - the VWvortex’s RS Stage I kit that involved mostly cosmetic changes. The problem is that while the car has been officially unveiled, nobody has been able to get their hands on one. VWvortex solution was to work with a prototype version, and the good news was that a lot of Golf VI aftermarket components fit nicely.

Now, we have even better news for you, as ABT Sportsline has announced it is currently working flat out on the Kempten version of the new VW Beetle. This is huge, as ABT is the world’s biggest tuner for the VW Group and these boys take their jobs very seriously.

“We implanted a 90 HP engine from a VW Bus into the Beetle, and gave it a pert bodywork, front spoiler lip and a rear spoiler. The car was real fun to drive, particularly on the windy roads here in Bavaria,”
general manager Hans-Jurgen Abt enthusiastically stated, who says he wants to conserve the image of stellar reliability the car has enjoyed for for over 50 years.

The tuner already has a lot of experience with what’s under the bonnet of the 2012 Bug and has given out estimative performance levels for the project: the 1.2 TSI will be boosted from 105 hp standard to 140 hp, while the 1.4 TSI will grow from 160 hp to 201 hp. “The two-litre turbo VW offers 200 HP or 147 kW, and we expect that the ABT version will provide 230/240 hp," says Abt.

Meanwhile, in the diesel department, the 1.6 TDI will provide 125 HP instead of 105 hp, and the 2.0 TDI will have 170 HP instead of the usual 140 hp.
