Audi has brought all of its best fighters to this year’s North American International Auto Show. Detroit is hosting the biggest automotive grudge match in years, and out of the four-ringed corner comes our first contender, the Audi R8, wearing red shorts.
The R8 looks like it’s received some strict dieting and training, and looks all the better for it. Its all-LED eyes looking focused and determined, the supercar has never been in better condition. Despite being a bit old now, the German is still every bit the heavyweight fighter it was.

This is the first appearance of the facelifted R8 in the US. The new model year offers a different grille, this time with a hexagonal design, as well as grand new LED headlights. Both these changes required Audi to also re-do the bumpers.

No big changes in the engine bay, unfortunately, as the R8 continues to be powered either a V8 and the V10. That means the base model offers a 4.2-liter with 424 hp (430 PS) and 430 Nm (317 lb-ft), while the more powerful mode has a 5.2-liter V10 with 518 hp (525 PS) and 530 Nm (391 lb-ft).

The biggest change, however, is the fact that the 6-speed automated manual R tronic has been replaced with a new 7-speed S tronic dual clutch gearbox.

So if you’re in the market for an exquisite supercar that also boasts new levels of refinement, you’re actually in the market for the new Audi R8.
