Japanese automaker Toyota’s luxury division has finally finished with the teasing game and has fully revealed their new GS 450h, which sports the same 3.5-liter DOHC V6 we’ve come to know and provides a total output of 338 horsepower, which is disappointingly about the same as the old generation.
Even though the debut is taking place in Euro, this is being treated like a US model, as they are calling it the 2013 GS 450h, presumably because it’s coming to market next year as a 2013MY. The performance figures are also a bit imperial, Lexus saying the car accelerates from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 5.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 131mph (210km/h). That’s about the same as the GS 350 that was recently unveiled in Pebble Beach, but the reason behind this is that the automaker was targeting emissions not performance.
Fuel consumption is expected to see an improvement of 30 percent is expected when compared to the previous generation. However, the 338 horsepower this car produces won’t try to bore you to death, as it can be put to the road via the rear wheels in five different modes (Normal, Eco, Sport S, Sport S+ and EV).
“The all-new GS 450h will provide our customers with an exciting blend of performance and precision in a new hybrid package," said Lexus vice president and general manager in the US, Mark Templin. “With its dynamic exterior styling, roomy interior and advanced technology features, the GS 450h further demonstrates Lexus’ mastery of the luxury hybrid.”
On the cosmetic front, the biggest change to the exterior is the introduction o three-lamp headlights, just like the RX 450h. We’d much prefer the uncluttered look of the GS 350 over this.
