Back in February, Dodge introduced the new Ram 1500 Tradesman, a model built with “small businessmen” and their needs in mind. Pickups are big business in Texas, and heavy duty models are especially loved there, so Chrysler group decided that the 2011 State Fair of Texas was the perfect place to give the Heavy Duty version an unveil.
The 1500 Tradesman HD is based on the regular cab 2500. This is a bit of marketing cunningness, as the truckmaker probably wants to associate the regular cab short-bed design with the heavy-duty frame of its big brother By doing this, Ram says that the Tradesman now boasts the best-in-class title for both of towing and cargo capacity categories.

Ram promises a 3,100-pound payload capacity, which tops the F-150 by 40 pounds and the Silverado by 1,235 pounds. Meanwhile, its maximum trailer weight of 11,500 pounds, the Tradesman HD tops the the Ford F-150 by 200 pounds and the Chevrolet Silverado by 800 pounds.

The model is only available with a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The other big piece of news to come this week from Texas is that Ram is now offering a bigger, 6-foot 4-inch RamBox is now available on all 1500, 2500 and 3500 models that can be equipped with the feature. The new storage compartment offers owners 18 percent more room and will cost $1,295, 32 percent lower compared with last year’s version.
