The Golf GTI fans probably know that the German automaker this year celebrates the 35th anniversary of the original model in 1976, and should be thrilled to find out they are in for a treat. The company has today released the first images showing a special anniversary edition, which will bring with it a couple of styling and performance enhancements.

Dubbed “Edition 35”, the special edition differentiates itself from the standard version through a set of visual upgrades, including revised front and rear bumpers, smoky light lenses, LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, glossy black plastic grille and side mirror trim, new alloy wheels and ‘35’ badging.

The ‘35’ pattern is also present inside the car, on the door sills, the head rests and the center of the seats. Speaking of the seats, these sport a fabric upholstery that has a honeycomb-like pattern instead of the standard model's tartan theme. Another visual modification is the golf ball-shaped gearshift lever.

Performance wise, the GTI Edition 35 will be powered by a revised version of the 2.0-liter TSI engine, tuned to deliver an extra 25 horsepower, adding up to a total of 235 horsepower. However, the automaker is yet to confirm the torque figure and acceleration times.

The 2011 Volkswagen GTI Edition 35 is to be officially launched at the 2011 Worthersee hot hatch festival in Austria on June 1, with prices starting from €30,425 (about $43,500 at the current exchange rate) in Germany. We’ll remind you that the standard model is priced from €27,275 (about $38,900) in its domestic market.

It is unknown whether the GTI Edition 35 will only be an European-only delicacy, or if it will make its move Stateside as well.
