2011 Scirocco R-Cup to Promote Golf R and Scirocco R in China

Volkswagen’s successful one-make event will be heading to China this year for the first time under the Scirocco R-Cup name. This year, five races will be run in China and two races in Malaysia, and the ‘R’ brand will be the focus of activities surrounding the motorsport events.

For example, a vehicle exhibition showcasing the road models of Volkswagen R will be a regular feature at races in the series.

“For Volkswagen R GmbH, the Scirocco R-Cup in China is a very good platform for supporting our own internationalization strategy. We will soon also have a presence in the key Chinese market with our successful Golf R and Scirocco R models. In addition, we will be progressively expanding our program of R-Line equipment packs,” said Ulrich Riestenpatt gt. Richter, General Manager of Volkswagen R GmbH on the company’s involvement.

Since 2010, Volkswagen R GmbH – as producer of the Scirocco R - has been sponsoring the Scirocco R-Cup in the framework of the DTM race series in Europe. Now the company is extending its sponsorship to the core market of China.

“As a DTM partner series, the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup will continue to perform on a grand stage. Letting fans come close to the action and delivering thrilling races are aims which the top touring car class and the world’s most eco-conscious one-make cup have in common. 2010 saw about 86,000 spectators on average flock to the jointly held races. Thanks to the push-to-pass system, which is unique in motorsport and puts a power boost of 50 hp at the driver’s fingertip, the Scirocco R-Cup guarantees captivating races,” stated a company press release.
