Volkswagen’s new Caddy Racer made its racing debut in the 2011 Volkswagen Racing Cup over the weekend, reaching the 11th and 14th places in the two races at Snetterton.
After the qualifying session, the number 33 RAC-liveried Caddy started the Race 1 in 15th place, being manhandled by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK Director, Simon Elliott. Eliott fought hard, but the competition was strong and thus he crossed the line in 11th place, which would be his grid spot for the following race.
By the first corner, Eliott moved up to eighth position, but an incident caused by a driver further ahead stopped his progress, with the driver avoiding action, which caused him to lose position.
The new Caddy Racer is powered by a 2.0-liter petrol unit delivering 270 hp, with the power being sent to the front axle via a six-speed VW RAcing quick sift gearbox. In addition to that, the rear axle has been borrowed from the road incarnation of the Golf.
“It is great to finally be back out on track with the Volkswagen Racing Cup for what is shaping up to be a more exciting season than ever. The new Caddy Racer feels strong already and I am really pleased with our debut performance,” said Elliott.
“We were unlucky to finish just outside the top ten this weekend but we have made some strong steps forward with the Caddy Racer’s development and that will be the aim for Brands Hatch. Since it was launched at the end of last year, the new Caddy has won a number of awards, and I am hopeful that the new Caddy Racer can add to this success."
