2010 European Car of the Year: Volkswagen Polo

The Germans have done it! What is perhaps the best Polo in generations has been recognized as the 2010 European Car of the Year. The mini-Golf managed to come in front of no less than 33 contenders in all, outclassing in the final rivals Citroen C3 Picasso, Mercedes Benz E-Klasse, Opel/Vauxhall Astra, Peugeot 3008, Skoda Yeti and Toyota iQ.

The official announcement was not yet made, but the British media has managed to get their hands on the score list for the seven vehicles. The Polo managed to score a total of 347 points, followed ten points behind by the iQ. Opel/Vauxhall Astra managed to gather 221 points, Skoda Yeti 158, the new E-Klasse 155, the Peugeot 3008 144 points while the C3 Picasso ranked seventh, with 133 points.

When the final seven were announced in the beginning of the month, the Polo was described by the judges as "just a scaled-down Golf."

"The Volkswagen spirit of excellence is integrated into the structure and looks of this model that plays the role of not being as big as other cars in this segment. Perceived quality is unprecedented in the category, and that especially shows in the elegant cabin," the judges said about the Polo.

We are still waiting for the official press release from the award's sanctioning body, to give you the exact details and reasons which led to the naming of the Polo. Keep an eye out for further updates. Until then, have a look at what autoevolution had to say about the new Polo, by following this link to the test drive we did this summer.
