New 1.2 TSI Engine Available on Polo, Golf and Golf Plus

In the new world order, caused by low budgets, ecology and fuel consumption, downsizing is everything. Yet the cars don’t really appear to be shrinking, but actually getting bigger with every new generation. To compensate, some car manufacturers, like Volkswagen, decided to shrink engines and add turbochargers, so that the high level of horsepower and torque is maintained.

It all started with the 1.4 liter TSI engine producing 170 hp, featuring both a turbocharger and a supercharger. This new idea created quite a lot of fuss, as everyone got really excited over the performance of such a small engine, while both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions remained low. E new era had begun.

Now, things got from small to tiny, as Volkswagen presented at the Vienna Engine Symposium the new TSI engine which is now available on Polo, Golf and Golf Plus models. The new engine produces 105 hp, just as much as the 1.6 diesel engine. Downsizing means low fuel consumption, so pretty soon petrol running cars will be just as fuel efficient as diesel running cars. This is great news for those who never liked diesel engines in the first place.

Another great aspect is that, thanks to to supercharger, the 1.2 liter TSI engine offers the maximum amount of torque, 175 Newton meters, starting from 1,500 rpm. So a TSI Polo or Golf might just offer the perfect balance between in-city and highway driving.

The 1.4 liter TSI engine got the “Engine of the Year” award for three years in a row. Will the little brother manage to get some international recognition? Well, we definitely think so.
