December is Celebration Month here at autoevolution, and a small portion of our special coverage has to do with pickup trucks. And when one says those two words, the mind immediately links them to one of the heavyweights of the segment, the Ford F-150. In part intentionally, we presented as few of them as possible, though.
We did that because, well, the Blue Oval flagbearer is always under the spotlight, as it leads the pack as far as new trucks are concerned. The pre-owned and custom markets, from where our favorite builds come from, are, however, filled with the much more visible Chevys.
From time to time, though, one incredible F-150 pops up, and we have no choice but to talk about it. This is what happened today, when we came across this eye-catching 1978 example of incredible appeal.
The nameplate was launched and sandwiched between the F-100 and the F-250 in 1975, which makes this one part of the very early batches. Yet a careful restoration erased all the years that have passed over it since it was born and ironed out any imperfections.
The first thing that smashes our perception of a Ford pickup is the paint. The gloss brownish-red seems to have been created especially to wrap up the metal of the truck, and it is perfectly highlighted by the black of the massive BFGoodrich all-terrain tires and the traces of chrome on the bumper, side trim, and 15-inch wheels.
The interior is equally impressive, with black vinyl generously used on the bucket seats and elsewhere, including on the dashboard. Speaking of the latter, it holds Dakota Digital gauges behind the steering wheel, and a Kenwood audio in the middle.
The entire shiny body of the truck, propped on top of a 4-inch (101-mm) lift kit, hints at the monster hiding under the hood. In this case, we’re talking about a modified 400-ci V8 (6.6-liter) of undisclosed power, linked to a 4-speed manual transmission.
The truck is presently for sale, and the dealer in charge of finding a new owner for it is asking $69,900.
