Because last December we chose to pay homage to pickup trucks as part of our special Celebration Month coverage, we’ve had quite the share of Ford F-Series hitting the screen. That will continue to happen in January, as we take on an even more daunting task, finding the best of the best in the Blue Oval world.
We’ve already featured as part of the Ford Month a number of high-profile cars made by the company, but this is the first old-school pickup truck included in our stories.
Modern-day F-Series, especially the flagship F-150, are undoubtedly great machines, but truth be told, we kind of doubt they’ll have, decades from now, the same appeal the F-100 of old presently enjoys. Maybe it's in the design, maybe in the hardware, but we’ll take F-100s such as this one everyday over a 2021 F-150.
The gloss orange example we have here comes from 1971, and that makes it a fifth-gen, the one that still looked like a no-nonsense pickup truck. It’s massive, it rides high above the ground, and would definitely make for a scary appearance in the rearview mirror when roaming at night over some deserted American highway.
The truck looks as good as it does because it was the object of a complete restoration not long ago. It kept most of the original hardware, but work on it managed to bring forth all the rest of the truck's inborn appeal.
Animated by a 360-ci (5.9-liter) worked through a 4-speed manual transmission, the 4x4 monster is fitted with a 9-inch rear, Dana 44 axle with locking hubs up front, and of course power steering.
For those with money to spare, this F-100 is for sale, and it goes for a rather hefty sum of $64,900 - that’s more than double the cost of a base 2021 F-150. Or you could just enjoy it as a poster pickup…
