Entering the exclusive club of Boss 429 Mustang owners has always been a high-stakes, high-reward affair. After all, we have seen examples go above their estimates at many auctions, selling quite recently for close to $350k.
You’re not having a déjà vu because this Candy Apple Red 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 isn’t the exact same one that sold at a Bonhams auction back in October of 2020 for no less than $346,000. The unit seen there was decidedly one with very low mileage – clocking in on the odometer a mere 3,404 miles (5,478 kilometers) by the time it was snatched off the auction lot.

This Candy Apple Red 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429, on the other hand, is a bit more affordable, if one is allowed to play with that word when Earth MotorCars is asking no less than $286k. That’s because it has seen a bit more travels in its lifetime, as the count reads a total of 46,773 miles (75,273 km).

Wondering if that’s enough to justify the price tag? The dealer certainly likes to believe to be so, and its main argument comes from the fact this Boss 429 (one of 238 examples dressed up in Candy Apple Red) just went through a recent frame-off restoration. That's the exact term used by the dealer, though the Mustang obviously has a unibody and not a body-on-frame platform.

Apparently, there was no nut or bolt left unturned or unscrewed since the seller claims the process involved spending $50k alone on the mechanics of the car.

Attention to detail was also paramount to this restoration, with everything made to remind us of that one fabled day when the Boss 429 left the factory premises. The seller proudly states that everything is exactly as it should, from the front bumper and right down to the “original and super rare OEM trunk mat.”

By the way, there’s a reason we keep seeing Candy Red Apple Boss 429s popping up here and there; with 238 examples out of a total of just 849 units for the 1969 model year, the shade was the second most popular out of a total of five colors.

Of course, this unit is complete with the feisty 375 horsepower engine and the heavy-duty four-speed manual transmission and even hides an interesting surprise under the body: its undercarriage is also correctly detailed in red oxide.
