The Blue Oval is winding down passenger car sales at home in America, but the Fiesta is going very strong in the United Kingdom. Britain’s sales charts were dominated by Ford last year, with the Fiesta taking the crown and the Transit Custom/Tourneo Custom commercial vehicle series taking second place. Meanwhile, the big Transit is doing great in the U.S. of A.
Let’s talk about America for a moment, where the Ford Transit has been the most successful commercial van every year, since 2015. Las year was no exception, with the Blue Oval sending out 139% more Transits than its closest competitor, for a total share of 38% of the full-size van segment.
With that interesting note out of the way, let’s focus on the Fiesta and Transit/Tourneo Custom series. The Fiesta managed to retain the overall sales crown for the 12th straight year in 2020, with a total of more than 49k units.
Overall, the Blue Oval was the top brand in the United Kingdom, and there’s no surprise about that, since the company has reigned supreme for the past 44 years! That’s exactly the same tally as for the F-Series and its command of the U.S. pickup segment.
Ford is proud of its latest crossover SUV, the Puma, which sold almost 26,300 examples in 2020; it will be interesting to see if 2021 will see the Fiesta dethroned in favor of the new arrival. It could, at least, jeopardize the second position held by the Transit Custom/Tourneo Custom (47,500 vehicles), which helped Ford retain leadership of the medium and light commercial vehicle segment for the 55th consecutive year.
Unfortunately, the first month of 2021 is not going to be a great one for the automotive industry in the United Kingdom, as the country is entering a new lockdown. A beacon of hope does come from the new EU and Turkey trade agreements that were signed just before the start of the new year.
