A superficial look at this 1962 Ford Galaxie 500XL might have one believe there is a natural 406 under the hood; hell, there are even the proper emblems in place attesting to that. But as usual when it comes to pre-owned machines, there’s more than meets the eye with this one.
The Galaxie moniker popped up on the Ford product list in 1959. It wasn’t around for long, having been discontinued no more than five years later, but that was enough for an important fanbase to be born, one that endures to this day.

There’s no shortage of Galaxies out there, so finding the one that checks all the right boxes on some shopper’s list requires some work. For those whose checklist includes a swapped 500XL, this here find might be what they were waiting for.

We’re looking at a car that initially packed a 352-ci (5.7-liter) V8, the engine that was the top of the range back when the first runs of the Galaxie appeared. One year later, the powerplant would move down the list, as the top spots were now occupied by the 406 and 427.

Sometime during its life, the 500XL (which by default was the higher-spec model in the series) we have here got bumped to the 406 engine, which comes complete with three 2-barrel Holley carburetors and 4-speed manual transmission. Aside from these changes, though, and the addition of matching 406 emblems on the front fenders, the car is mostly original.

Wearing a Castillian Gold paint job, it too mostly original, the Galaxie rides on 14-inch steel wheels with hubcaps and reveals a black vinyl interior with just the right amount of wear once the doors are open.

1962 Ford Galaxie 500XL is for sale on a specialized website for $39,900.
