You can sit behind a keyboard and complain about the fact the production MKV Toyota Supra isn't as impressive as the FT-1 concept that previewed it, but wouldn't it be a better idea to do something about a matter that's so important to you? Well, the drag monster that is the MKV sitting before us serves as the perfect example of taking the Supra into one's own hands.
This A90-generation Supra recently checked out the Palm Beach International Raceway, with the visit resulting in a pair of records. We're talking about an ET (Elapsed Time) of 8.78 seconds and a trap speed of 156 mph (251 kph), albeit with the two being achieved during separate runs.
As showcased in the clip below, which comes from That Racing Channel, this is a couple-handled adventure: the girlfriend mastered the fastest run (trap speed), while the boyfriend, who handled the tune of this extreme build, nailed the quickest one (ET).
We've already seen the BMW B58 motor of the Japanese sports car taken to about 1,000 hp for the world of sliding (other pro drifters went for the good old 2JZ swap). Well, this drag strip animal has kept its Bavarian heart, albeit with the 3.0-liter straight-six now being built along with the ZF eight-speed tranny (the list of motor goodies includes the pistons, connecting rods, studs, and gasket).
Among others, the engine sports an Extreme Turbo Systems 6870 kit featuring Precision Turbo hardware, along with an air intake (would you look at that headlight work!), a complete exhaust removal and many others.
Note that while a nitrous setup is installed - there's a 150 shot for the takeoff and a 35 one for going down the runway - this isn't always used (the said 156 mph run is an example of the latter scenario).
The engine delivers around 900 hp and 910 lb-ft (1,234 Nm) of torque without the second power adder while hitting the button brings the output to 950 lb-ft (1,288 Nm) and just as many ponies at the rear wheels - that would make for around 1,100 hp at the crank. And, for the sake of comparison, we'll mention this is roughly three times the factory output.
Interestingly, the driveshaft and the suspension are still the stock units, with the car, which is also driven on the street, having racked up just under 10,000 miles (16,500 km) before said records were grabbed.
Of course, the wheel/tire package is drag-friendly, with skinnies up front and beadlock wheels holding the massive-sidewall rear tires in place for those explosive starts. Sporting a partially stripped interior and featuring a single carbon fiber racing seat, but accommodating the lady driver, this Supra tipped the scales at 3,290 lbs (1,490 kg).
Sure, it won't be too long until these records fall. But to see the Supra make its way into the mid-8s quarter-mile arena less than two years after entering production says quite a lot about this platform and what we can expect from it in the future.
