MOTO GUZZI 1000 SP II (1983-1988) Specs, Performance & Photos

The Moto Guzzi 1000 SP was a touring bike produced by Moto Guzzi from 1977 to 1985 as part of the same family as the Moto Guzzi V1000 I-Covert and Moto Guzzi V1000 G5.

The bike was intended to go long journeys, delivering excellent time, but it also had a commercial objective: to respond to BMW's R100RS, which was attacking the market by storm.

The SP acronym spelled Super Protection, which came from the fairing that made it the customized series of the previous 1000 G5, developed using the wind tunnel owned by Moto Guzzi since the fifties.

It was followed by the 1983 Moto Guzzi 1000 SP II, which packed the innovation of the square finning of the cylinders and numerous technical and visual modifications.

Some modifications included new colors, a more modern front fender, a die-cast plate for the footrests, and a 16-inch front wheel to improve handling.

However, the 16-inch front wheel made the handling worse, so many Moto Guzzi enthusiasts privately returned to the 18-inch front wheel to try to improve handling by themself.

As for performance, the 1983 Moto Guzzi 1000 SP II was equipped with a 949cc four-stroke air-cooled V-twin engine mounted underneath the fuel tank, fed by two 30 mm Dell'Orto carburetors, delivering 62 hp with a peak force at 6,500 rpm and 75 Nm (56 lb-ft) torque at 5,200 rpm.
