The 2 Series Active Tourer: the First BMW in Ages with a New Interior

Even the biggest fanboy out there (myself included) can’t claim that the BMW interiors of the current cars are on par with today’s standards. If there’s one thing that’s absolutely wrong with Bavarian cars, it’s their old-looking dashboards and center consoles.
Since the E90 platform nothing really changed. We have the same layout and the same buttons recycled between models with little changes from one generation to another.

However, looking over the cabin shots of the new 2 Series Active Tourer, I couldn’t help but notice that there’s a touch of originality in it, a breath of fresh air.

The instrument cluster is simple and focuses on need-to-know basis items such as a classic speedo and a rev counter. About the instrument cluster you have a retractable screen that will serve as your head-up display, similar to the one found on the MINI. That’s a new touch for BMWs too.

Moving to the right you’ll notice a new, stacked design that’s different from what we’ve been getting used to. You still know that you’re inside a BMW though, thanks to the familiar design of the buttons.

Just below the iDrive screen, there’s the AC panel with a SYNC button (previously missing on some models) and a new driving experience control panel that lets you go into Sport or Eco Pro mode.

The gearshift lever is new and now lacks that ‘parking’ button on its top that everyone complained about and even the seats have a new touch to them, looking really comfortable.

It’s obvious that the car was designed to be as practical as possible. Inside the cabin you get plenty of storage spaces both in the front and in the back. The sliding rear seats from the F15 X5 migrated in the back of the SAT and offer even more practicality. Last but not least, there’s a new steering wheel that looks really good, despite not wearing any “M” emblem.

In the end, the new 2 Series will have a lot of convincing to do. Not just to old fans of the brand but also to the new demographic it wants to bring to the BMW corner as the competition is fierce.
