The production version of the Lexus LF-LC concept car is nearing its latest stages of development. A team of engineers was recently seen close to the Nurburgring track. Most of the development work has already been carried out in Japan, a fact proven by the lack of measuring devices.
The LF-LC concept car was highly praised by automotive journalists and members of the public. It made its debut in January of 2012 at the North American Auto Show in Detroit. However, it was also shown at several European events. Not many people know that this project was in the making since 2010, though.
The sexy two-door coupe owes its exterior and interior styling to the Calty Design Center in Newport Beach, California. We're pleased to report that, in the transition from concept to production reality, the LC has kept the three LED lenses arranged in a triangular pattern inside the headlight. This piece is inspired by old movie cameras and is one of several elements needed to sell this as a pioneering 2-door flagship.
In many ways, the design reminds us of the old Lexus SC, which was also made by Calty. The boot opening is very shallow, and the rear shoulders are long without being pronounced. This is what we imagine an avid golfer would enjoy, so it's old-school Lexus.
Lexus executive VP Kazuo Ohara says the LF-LC coupe would be an all-new car, possibly built from scratch using a newly developed set of underpinnings, that would take around four years to make it to production.
Of course, this being a Lexus, high emphasis will be placed on saving fuel and being kind to the environment. If you're worried about the state of the polar ice caps, you'll be glad to know the LC will use electricity to move, probably combined with the 5-liter V8 from the RC F. The combined output of over 500 horsepower should help it compete with rivals such as the Porsche 911 and BMW 6 Series.
Japanese media is reporting that the LC Coupe will debut in late 2016, sharing its underpinnings with the next generation of the LS limousine. And, yeah, expect it to cost way more - $100,000, possibly even $200,000, according to some reports.
