When you try and think of a cool Opel, most people will immediacy remember the old Asta Bertone. It was a relatively affordable two-door model with brilliant styling from one of Italy’s leading design houses.
The twin-top that came after it never managed to capture the same sort of attention. In fact, a lot of manufacturers have failed in making convertibles out of their hatchbacks, but Opel’s latest attempt seems to be a good one.
This new Astra Cabrio will most likely go on sale later his year or in early 2013. It will be built on GM’s Delta II platform, using technology from the new Astra GTC, including the HiPerStrut suspension at the front and the Watt’s link rear axle.
To get a nice shape to the roof and keep the weight down, Opel has chosen an automatically operated soft-top design.
Engine options will be the same as the rest of the Astra range, with the pick of the bunch being the 1.4-liter turbo, the best balance of affordability, power and economy.
