We’ve brought you plenty of spy shots of the next-generation ‘991’ Porsche 911, in both in regular Carrera and Carrera Cabriolet bodystyles, but this is the first time that we’re seeing the formidable 911 Turbo variant in testing. We have to admit that our jaws dropped, our hairs stood on end and our hearts started racing when we first saw this amazing new turbocharged beast.

It’s clearly the biggest evolutionary step that Porsche has ever taken with the car, as the proportions are more coupe-ish and the overhangs look much reduced, creating the image of a well-planted supercar.

How can we tell it’s a Turbo? Well, it doesn't take a genius to notice those two massive air intakes situated on the flanks of the vehicle, and a set of flared rear fenders do their best to hide some serious sticky rubber.

The next generation 911 Turbo will once again take the fight to Ferrari, this time offering somewhere in the region of 550 horsepower from its 3.8-liter flat-six engine. Porsche will also offer both brake regeneration and stop start systems to help reduce fuel consumption by 12 percent, according to some sources. The new Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK) gearbox will also be offered and with no less than seven forward gears, it combines the driving comfort of a converter automatic transmission with the dynamic shift of a racing gearbox. The manual will also sprout an extra cog in order to better the model’s fuel economy and emissions on the highway.

We’re still not sure about what is going on with the rear spoiler (whale tail) of the new Turbo, whether or not Porsche will fit one is still up in the air.

The regular Carrera will arrive at this year’s Frankfurt Auto Show, but the 991 2012 Porsche 911 Turbo will have to wait until next year’s Geneva show in March.
