Alpine, the sports-car brand owned by Renault, is finally reborn.
Today, officials of the Alpine brand have revealed their latest concept car, the Alpine Vision Concept. Production of the road-going version will begin in 2017, and the vehicle that will be manufactured on the line will share a good part of the design with this concept car.
According to Antony Villain, Alpine design director, the design of the concept car reflects 80% of the look of the road car. The French company has already applied for trademarks for the names AS1 and AS110, so the moniker of the upcoming Alpine production model could be one of the two.
The new Alpine Vision Concept is powered by a mid-mounted four-cylinder turbo engine. Its output has yet to be revealed, but this sports car looks like something that might entertain the driver and passenger in the corners, and not necessarily in straight lines. Previously leaked figures suggested that it would be powered by a 1.8-liter with around 250 hp.
As you can quickly notice, the concept’s lines are influenced by the classic A110 Berlinette, and the resemblance is easy to spot, especially on the front end and on the profile of the vehicle.
When compared to the Alpine Celebration Concept, the Alpine Vision did not go a long way. The exhibit features restyled graphics for the headlights, a simplified hood, different rear-view mirrors, and other features. The rear of the car is simpler than that of the Celebration Concept. As the photo with the Vision and the Celebration concepts seen from above reveals, the new concept from Alpine ditched some of the vents for more production-like elements.
The engine of the upcoming Alpine car is borrowed from the Renault family and is linked to a twin-clutch transmission. The car is expected to use a bored-out version of the current 1.6-liter turbocharged unit found in the Clio RS, made to have a larger capacity and improved output. After all, the Alpine Vision Concept’s quoted 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time is under 4.5 seconds.
