The Nurburgring has witnessed another record drive today, but it was not about speed or lap times.
Instead, a Chinese stunt driver named Han Yue has driven a MINI Hatchback on two wheels for the entire length of the track. While it is not the fastest lap of the Nurburgring for a MINI, it is also no the longest distance driven by a car on its side wheels. Even with the facts mentioned above, the attempt is impressive regardless.
The feat was streamed live on Facebook by the verified account of the Nurburgring, and the entire run took a little over 45 minutes. Unlike previous stunts involving cars driving on two wheels, this vehicle managed to do it on the most demanding track in the world, including hairpins, over 300 meters of altitude change, and the legendary “Karussell” banked hairpin turn.
When compared to a standard MINI Hatchback of the previous generation, the stunt car features a roll cage, a racing seat and harness, and a set of unique wheels and tires.
The tires are made of solid rubber, and the specification used is best employed in off-road scenarios. Hub adapters had to be fitted to make the proper wheels fit the MINI selected for this record attempt.
The broadcast was briefly interrupted for a few seconds on two sections of the Green Hell, because the reception was insufficient to continue live streaming.
Regardless, the number of people watching the video went from 1,500 when we found it in our timeline, and climbed to over 8,000 individuals later in the broadcast.
Over 200,000 people watched this attempt, and a million people had seen in their timelines that the live video was being transmitted. It is important to note that this is the first Nurburgring record attempt that was aired on Facebook, but we sense that it won't be the last.
