While the Germans go about designing their cars to exude and understated aggression (see the 2014 BMW X5), which makes them very imposing and appealing to most buyers, the Americans have never cared much for subtlety, and the new SRT8 version of the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV proves that in spades.
It takes the recently-refreshed Grand Cherokee, which is already the kind of vehicle you would want to get out of the way of, and made it even meaner! With the black grille, huge bumper with integrated LED daytime running lights and large front ‘mouth’, the Grand Cherokee SRT8 is a real head-turner.
The same kind of treatment continues all-round, with big wheels, wider wheelarches and a rear bumper which houses two humongous exhausts. The overall effect is impressive to say the least, and it shows that the Chrysler designers really do know how to make a handsome SUV.
Inside, the car gets the same updated layout as the regular version of the new Grand Cherokee, with dashes of extra sportiness, such as the thick-rimmed SRT-branded steering wheel, carbon fiber trim and deep-looking bucket seats.
The engine is left unchanged, from the previous version - a 6.4-liter HEMI V8, which pumps out 470 hp and 630 Nm or 465 lb-ft of torque. However, with the new eight-speed gearbox, both efficiency and performance should be improved. Top speed is expected to stay the same - 257 km/h or 160 mph.
