Tuning an already powerful machine isn’t as hard as some people might think. Bolt a supercharger or strap a thumping great turbocharger and you’re almost there. Then again, increasing the output without compromising the drivability of a sports car is a wholly different story.
Today we want to tell you what an auto shop from Mesa, Arizona, is capable of massaging out of the C7 Corvette’s LT1 small-block V8. Before all else, we have to mention that the 6.2-liter naturally aspirated powerhouse can deliver 460 ponies and 465 lb-ft (630 Nm) in standard tune. In plain English, a lot of oomph.

Now cue Cordes Performance Racing and one of their packages for the Z51-enhanced Corvette. A family run company with “an extreme passion for what we do,” CPR treated the adjacent Stingray with three simple mods:

An ECS (East Coast Supercharging) kit, new headers and a methanol injection system for bigger bangs.

These three modifications pushed the Corvette’s figures to 635 horsepower and 567 lb-ft (768 Nm) at the crank. According to the tuner, the customer of this C7 is “going to love having over 200 more RWHP than stock.” Now who can disagree with that?

What’s even more impressive than the enhanced output figures is that Cordes Performance Racing is adamant that this C7 Corvette build is centered around drivability, not out-and-out horsepower. In a tuning world obsessed with multiplying ponies and torque to the extreme, a tuning outfit that focuses on drivability is like a breath of fresh air.
