GM Celebrates the Manufacturing of Over 500 Million Vehicles Since 1908 19 photos
Half a billion cars. Superminis, compact hatchbacks, a full-size luxury sedan with plug-in hybrid technology or a dually pickup truck, General Motors builds them all. In business since 1908, the Detroit giant is celebrating a big milestone these days, prior to the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro unveiling event on May 16th.
Founded in 1908 near the city of Flint, Michigan, as the holding company for Buick and McLaughlin Car, GM’s infancy was spearheaded into profit by pioneering businessman William C. Durant.

Over its 106-year existence, General Motors went belly up a single time - when the American company filed for Chapter 11 reorganization in 2009, losing a number of automobile brands as a consequence.

The bailout of General Motors represents one of the most important automotive events in history, as well as the first big challenge took up by US President Barrack Obama. After numerous cavalcades, the automotive megacorp is more alive and kicking harder than ever despite the lamentable Year of the Recalls mess-up.

In the adjacent release, General Motors doesn’t tell what vehicle is number 500 million. To boot, half a million cars are labeled by the manufacturer as “the most of any automaker by far,” a figure that’s rather impossible to verify. How did GM celebrate this event?

The company offered a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu sedan to a retired Army corporal that fought in Iraq. Other than that, the automotive company is informing that a $174-million investment will benefit the Fairfax Assembly plant to support production of the all-new Malibu.

“During 2015, we expect to sell more than 1,000 new vehicles per hour, 24 hours per day,” declared GM CEO Mary Barra. “This adds up to nearly 10 million vehicles, the most in our history. I look at this extraordinary volume as 10 million opportunities to prove what kind of company we are and to say thank you.”
