The all-new generation of the E-Class coupe, codenamed C238, is only a few short days away from its official debut. As such, Mercedes has begun the teasing game with a video that shows several details, including the headlights, the all-important taillight design and the dashboard.
The new E-Class Coupe will utilize the technology from the W213 sedan while placing an emphasis on elegant design. Compared to its predecessor, it will be longer, slightly lighter and may offer several new types of powertrains. That's exciting stuff... if you can afford one.
With autonomous driving tech on its way and several AMG versions planned, it's impossible to confuse this for the old E-Class, which was more like a reskin of the CLK-Class. The German media is reporting that during the December 14th unveiling we will also get to see a 450 horsepower performance model, although it's unclear if that's of the V8 variety or a 6-banger. We think that unlike the E43 and C43, this E50 will pack a 4-liter to compete with what the BMW M550i and Audi S6 have got. Put that's pure speculation on our part.
Of course, Mercedes makes several other 2-door models, notably the C205 C-Class and the flagship S-Class Coupe. But this teaser reveals many areas where the E-Coupe differs, such as the lack of B-pillar, which its smaller brother has.
Inside, elves have rearranged and redesigned the air vents from the sedan to make the cabin look modern. The graphics are sporty and so is the carbon fiber dash trim.
The taillights are long and thin, just like I stated in a previous article. They're probably available with OLED technology, but the real surprise is a sparkling effect that lets people know you've bought something special.
Judging from the shape of the wheels and the car icon in the dash, the model in the video is either the E300 with a 2-liter turbo or the E400 with the 3-liter twin-turbo V6 pushing out 333 horsepower. Either way, it's pretty safe to say that every E-Class Coupe offered will have the 9G-Tronic installed as standard, although an E 200 entry-level model with a stick could be offered as a way to bring prices in line with the outgoing car (€32,000). However, we're not sure who will want that model.
