Described as sophisticated and dynamic, the tenth-generation E-Class is the best E-Class ever made. In addition to the Regular Joe versions, there’s also the Mercedes-AMG E63 S 4Matic+, the most ludicrously powerful E-Class there's ever been. After the W213 sedan and S213 wagon, a new body style in the offing.
Internally referred to as C238, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe is set to make its first public outing in the flesh at the Detroit Auto Show this coming January. Up to this moment in time, spy photos depict pretty much everything we were expecting from the two-door model. Thing is, the peeps at Autocar have learned that an all-new type of AMG brawler is on the horizon, and it’s expected to bear the E50 Coupe 4Matic nameplate.
The cited publication believes that the E50 name is no coincidence. Celebrating 50 years since AMG set up shop in Affalterbach, the E-Class Coupe in E50 4Matic flavor is said to pack the all-new M256 engine. In other words, we’re dealing with a 3.0-liter inline-6 with two turbochargers strapped to it for good measure. Slated to debut in the facelifted S-Class, Mercedes-Benz promises more than 408 PS (402 hp) and 500-plus Nm (367 lb-ft).
It remains to be seen just how frisky the M256 will get under the hood of the 2018 Mercedes-AMG E50 Coupe 4Matic, but one thing is certain: the 48V electrical system. According to the automaker, the 48V system is a must due to the “electric auxiliary compressor.” So to speak, one of the two turbos is driven by electricity. 300 milliseconds is all it takes for the eZV to spool up to 70,000 rpm. Hence, the automaker is promising a “dynamic engine response with no turbo lag” from the soon-to-debut M256 twin-turbo inline-6 engine.
What happens when the low-rpm high torque from the eZV starts to wither? The larger exhaust turbocharger cuts in, of course. Beyond the fancy go-faster stuff, the integrated starter generator of the 48V system packs hybrid functions that include a momentary boost of 15 kW (20 PS / 20 hp) and 220 Nm (162 lb-ft) during kickdown. Hence, every Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG model equipped with the M256 inline-6 can be considered a mild hybrid.
Mind you, I’m keeping my hopes up that the purported E50 Coupe 4Matic will be more of a sports coupe rather than a fuel-efficient boulevard cruiser.
