We have exciting news for every car guy who thinks the SEAT Leon is way cooler than the Volkswagen Golf and especially the Skoda Octavia. The company is working on its first-ever SUV, and we have the latest information.
Based on the all-new MQB platform the model will sit somewhere between crossovers and small SUVs. It will share many components with the Leon, including a whole host of engines and the gearboxes they come with.

A new name

Our sources tell us that SEAT is considering the name "Prostyle" for their SUV. It's hip and young, just like the sort of customers they hope to attract. The Martorell carmakers will work carefully to keep everything people loved about the award-winning Leon, including the low roof line and sharp lines.

The name was trademarked by SEAT in April 2013 for use in automobiles. The Prostyle will be something completely different to the Volkswagen Tiguan II. The model will have an identity that's very close to the Mercedes GLA and Volvo V40 Cross Country. From launch, dynamism will play a crucial role in its marketing.

Familiar design

At the end of March, SEAT officially confirmed that an SUV will be added to the range in 2016. It's already been previewed by the IBX concept which was unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. As you can see from our rendering, the lines look very similar to those of the Leon, with sharp creases down the side and familiar all-LED headlights up front.

Sales of small urban SUVs have grown by 40% since 2009 and now number 1 million units per year in Europe alone. The Spanish have built a reputation for offering a 50-50 blend between comfort and sportiness.

Plug-in hybrid likely

The IBX concept came out fighting the green fight. It had an onboard electric motor and battery which could power the car for up to 45 all-electric kilometers (27 miles). This is something Volkswagen oily bits can already do. Both the Golf and Passat come with versions called GTE, which are plug-in hybrids that combine a 1.4-liter turbo with EV tech.

The Prostyle could be one of the first SEAT models to go super green. The company has already played with the idea and built a small fleet of test cars, based on the old Leon and the Altea XL. The plug-in SUV is likely to be marketed under the letter "E", which SEAT has trademarked in 2010 for use with eco-friendly vehicles.

As for the rest of the engine range, this should include the following powerhouses

  • 1.6 TDI with 120 PS
  • 2.0 TDI with 150 and 190 PS
  • 1.4 TSI with 150 PS
  • 1.8 TSI with 190 PS
  • 2.0 TSI with 220 PS
