And despite not having expanded one spec of dust in terms of width, the tracks are now wider: 1.58 inches (40 mm) up front and 0.5 inches (12 mm) at the rear.

The Cayman was always praised for its stiff chassis, so Porsche went ahead and made it... 40 percent stiffer. German humor. The 2014 model is a mixture of aluminum, high-strength steel and magnesium.

The new model comes with larger standard wheels (18-inch and 19-inch for the Cayman S), while also packing more features and a more generous glass surface. So how did these, together with the size and rigidity increase affect the weight? Well, they added 37.5 lbs (17 kg), which means that the car is “only” 66 lbs (30 kg) lighter than its predecessor.

People may call Porsche designers lazy, but the facts beg to differ. In a bid to boost high-speed stability, the Cayman’s aerodynamic lift was cut by 25 percent at both axles. As for the drag coefficient, this has a respectable 0.30 value.

The windscreen has been brought forward by a hefty 4 inches (100 mm), while the roofline flows nicely back, as if it was sculpted by the airflow. Underneath these clothes, we find a cabin that makes up one of the Cayman’s strong points.

The Cayman has become easier to use everyday. The access is easy and the aforementioned wheelbase boost has made the cabin a place that doesn’t spell “sports car compromises”, despite the car keeping its compact feeling. Even the driving position is more relaxed, despite offering flawless sporty accuracy.

The information flow to the driver is a nice translation of Porsche’s motorsport work. The new dashboard instrument layout means you are treated with a 4.6-inch configurable display that’s disguised as a dial. We’re happy to let ourselves fooled this way. As for the real infotainment treat, this comes in the form of a 7-inch touchscreen display on the center console.

Below, we find Porsche’s characteristic one-button-for-each-function layout and the ergonomics are simply superb. In combination with the compact size of the Cayman, Porsche’s new raised center console makes every control available within a thought’s range.
