One of the world's leading motorcycle brands issued a safety recall for a handful of dual-sport bikes. Certain examples of the 2022 model year Tenere 700 may have been produced with front brake calipers featuring one or more incorrect flange bolts. How incorrect, though?
According to documents published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, we're dealing with an incorrect thread length condition. The threaded portion of the bolt should measure 20 millimeters (0.78 inches) on a 40-millimeter (1.57-inch) bolt. Yamaha Motor USA was informed of this problem by the mothership in Japan sometime during late June 2023.
Yamaha removed suspect bolts from the production line immediately after identifying said issue. As a result of this blunder, the Japanese company required the vendor to add an extra check process. The front brake caliper flange bolt in question bears part number 90105-10778. Affected motorcycles produce a clunking sound from the front brake under light braking. An incorrect thread length may damage the mounting hole threads. Too much damage may cause the front caliper to detach.
Owners will be notified via first-class mail between July 20 and July 24. Dealers will inspect the front brake caliper's flange bolts and mounting hole threads. If a mounting hole thread exhibits the slightest damage, then dealers are required to replace the front caliper in addition to the incorrect mounting bolts. In the meantime, owners can use the NHTSA's website to verify whether their Tenere 700s are recalled or not.
Yamaha believes that only 2 percent of the 211-strong recall population exhibits the aforementioned issue. Said motorcycles were manufactured in the period between July 27, 2022 and August 29, 2022. Named after a desert stage of the Dakar Rally rather than Tenerife, the Tenere 700 is currently available to configure in the United States of America for model year 2023.
The 2023 model starts at $10,499 plus $450 for the destination charge and a further $300 for the freight surcharge. As implied, 700 is an approximation of the parallel-twin engine's displacement in cubic centimeters. The 689-cc lump is closely related to the powerplant in the MT-07 naked, which costs $8,199.
Not exactly the most powerful adventure motorcycle out there, the Tenere 700 isn't afraid to get dirty. Equipped with 21- and 18-inch tires, the dirt-ready bike flaunts a 43-millimeter inverted fork with 8.3 inches of travel. Out back, the shock absorber offers up to 7.9 inches of travel. A remote preload adjuster makes fine tuning for changing loads and riding conditions a breeze. Anti-lock brakes come standard, and riders can fully disable the system for better control in off-road conditions.
